In this example, it's called Container disk1. Choose an existing APFS container in the sidebar. Click View at the top left of the Disk Utility screen. In the Disk Utility, the options for erase, restore and unmount are all unavailable (see picture 2), I imagine that's because you normally cannot do any of these on the OS X Base System disk. From here, follow these steps to create a new volume on your computer: Select Go on your Mac's Toolbar.
